Plumbers Lambton: Keeping Lambton Homes Flowing

A coal town that grew up. This suburb was established as a coal-mining township from 1863, and the housing still shows it. Pre-1940 miners' cottages and Federation weatherboard homes sit alongside mid-century brick and brick-veneer infill, with later subdivisions on former mine and drive-in sites.

The numbers behind the work. At the last census the suburb counted 2,078 dwellings, and 76.1 per cent of them are separate houses, mostly owner-occupied. Older owner-occupied houses mean original fittings kept in service long past their use-by date.

Clay drains and tree roots. The mining-era cottages were laid with earthenware and clay sewer and stormwater drainage that is now brittle and prone to cracking, and mature street trees push roots into every joint. Repeat blockages are the norm until the line is relined or replaced.

Hot water past its prime. Many pre-1940 and mid-century homes still run original hot water systems and pipework well past their service life. Clean-energy register figures put the suburb at roughly 702 heat pump and 624 solar hot water installs at last count, so plenty of older units remain to fail each winter.

Stormwater and the creek. Low-lying streets near Lambton Park and Ker-rai Creek sit in a recognised flood catchment, and homes there were inundated in the 2007 Pasha Bulker storm. With around 1,076mm of rain in an average year, heavy falls still overload stormwater drains in those streets.

Gas from another era. Many century-old homes retain dated gas fittings and connections that need inspection and upgrading during renovations. We handle that work as part of the renovation, not as an afterthought.
